Blewbury

Blewbury Village

A contemporary self-build home in Oxfordshire, in the village of Blewbury, this development sought to construct a new contemporary dwelling in an Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB).

Contemporary Self-Build Home, Oxfordshire

The site had previously been granted planning for a smaller, 1.5-story traditionally-styled dwelling by the former owner. When Applethorpe purchased the site, they wanted to build a modern, contemporary property to contrast the recently constructed Sweetcroft homes to the South. The planners applauded the new designs, giving specific reference to the selection of materials.

KW Architectural managed the planning process, including the appointment of third party ecologists, arboriculturists and planning consultants. Cooperation with the local Highways authority were of paramount importance, as the land off which the dwelling is accessed is restricted in width. Careful consideration also had to be given to the windows on the front elevation, as the dwelling could potentially overlook the adjacent cottage. This was achieved by ensuring the rooms which did not require an outlook were at the front of the house (bathrooms, dressing rooms, cupboards etc).

Upon entering the dwelling, guests are welcomed with a double-height entrance lobby, flooded with light by a roof lantern above. Doors off the hallway lead to a study, living room, open plan kitchen / dining area, cloaks cupboard and a WC. The utility room completes the ground floor.

The first floor has a large master bedroom complete with dressing room and an ensuite, with a further three double bedrooms (one with an ensuite) and a generous family bathroom with a free standing bath. All bedrooms look West onto the AONB, and benefit from glazed Juliet balconies.
